Creating a Safe Haven: Trauma-Informed Teaching Strategies for Fostering Resilience in the Classroom by Nicole Mundstock
This was a real eye-opener regarding what so many of our students are dealing with. Good techniques are offered for how we can help them feel supported and successful.
Thank you for bringing this relevant topic to the forefront. I want to be more aware of creating an environment with these strategies.
2022 Panel Discussion: The Future of PMI, Online & Hybrid: What's Next
by Deb Riemer, Karina Torres-Cortes, and John Streit
Regardless of classroom setting, incorporating technology and having the ability to grow into the future of teaching is vital to maintain a sound student base. I believe that it also allows for a more realistic teaching model making our students more comfortable, competent and confident when they flow into their externships, clinicals, and future jobs.
SUCH an enjoyable panel discussion! The parts of the discussion on supporting the holistic student and the challenges students face when participating in research were particularly helpful and insightful!
2022 Communication In The Virtual World: Professional Emails and On-going Dialogue by Heidi Chavez
The information shared in the presentation is relevant each and every day by way of communication with students and with all staff and faculty at all levels.
I have a hard time documenting the communications and knowing what is important to note and what is not. Being mindful not to overwhelm the students is also an important factor considering we are so high contact here.
Cruising to Excellence: Empowering First Semester Online Students to Succeed by Kelly and Kevin Heisinger
There are so many good ideas here! I think my favorites are to remember not to use lingo that is only known to the staff and faculty. Students need the opportunity to learn about what we do and how we do it. I also like the idea of praising students who go above and beyond on discussion boards as I know how time consuming that is. I also love the idea of providing tips and tricks in the announcements and then cutting out pieces of those to send through portal. This was fantastic!
I really liked the notes to keep videos short and also make sure email subjects are enticing. I feel like it is a fight to get students engaged right now in both environments.
2022 Blackboard Tips and Tricks by Kelly Gramling and Jami Weidmann
I often use Blackboard to communicate with my students, but was unaware of all of the different options available to instructors. The video provided me with detailed examples of how I can make the most of the tools on Blackboard.
I learned several different tips in this session about blackboard. I learned how to utilize the discussion board Q & A to provide the students more information about emails can benefit all students not just the ones that ask the question.
2022 Elevate your Instruction with Panopto by Josie Strahle & Jessica Wade
I like that Panopto will take the places of youtube or other applications I have had to use previously to show students videos. I feel it would be helpful to record myself talking over the videos I use to stop and focus on certain aspects of the video.
Use of Panopto for externship communication can add a personal touch to communications and aid in students feeling connected and supported when not on campus. It is also valuable for answering questions to the group with visual and audio information.
2022 Leveraging Rubrics for Student Learning by MJ Rodriguez
The presentation gave me a deeper understanding of Rubrics and how Rubrics are very beneficial to students.
Rubrics have and will continue to be used for my classes. This presentation made me aware of the best practices to keep in mind while creating a rubric while clearly distinguishing between performance levels.
Mapping the Journey to Student Success: Using Data to Guide Student Learning on Your Road Trip by Emily Bertelsen and Vanessa Hall
Great presentation!! I started in classroom instruction this semester, the discussion on grading and using the grade book was very helpful.
There is great value in looking at the data for student success! When students fail my course, I take it very personally so I need to know that there are other instructors out there with the same challenges and see if maybe we can collaborate to reduce those failures. Thanks for all of the visuals!
2022 The Power of Peer Reviews
by Rhonda Baughman
I love a few key points Rhonda pointed out during her presentation. First and foremost is zero expectation. Are you burnt out? especially if you have been teaching for so long. For my classroom, I like the idea of early introduction. Tell them in the beginning and set that expectation instead of dreading the topic. I always like to say "plant the seed early" so it will be less traumatizing later on.
This presentation allowed me to give good feedback to let the students improve their peer review of papers.
